Two very different events provided the necessary conditions that would see Europe move our of the Middle Ages and into a new era of reform. The first was the Black Death or Bubonic Plague. This plague had far reaching effects on many aspects of Medeival life since the loss of so many lives affected all aspects of life. The Hundred Years War was the second major event that shaped the development of Europe during this time. Both England and France were constantly warring with each other. When William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings, a whole new era began in Europe. William formed a council - The Great Council - which was to evetually lead to the formation of what has become our modern Parliament. At first the kings in England grew in power as they gained more land but this was not to continue. Eventually, under King John, English nobles rose up against the king and forced him to sign charter, the Magna Carta. At the same time, the peasants rose up in protest against the rules that were being passed that limited their ability to make a living.
