The Feudal system was a system that relied heavily on each person in the system keeping their oath. Medeival society developed from this basic idea. Because there were raiders coming from all directions, people needed to have some sort of protection if they were to have any type of life. The feudal system provided them with a sense of security. Over time, the development of trade, the expansion of the church and the development of a new class of people, the merchants, led to a growth of population in certain places, towns. In order for a town  , borough ,to officially exist, a charter was needed which provided the people of the town with certain guarantees and allowed for the towns to establish town councils. As towns developed and crafts people and merchants gathered, guilds became important to ensure that quality products were made. From the ashes of the Roman Empire and new way of life was developing and beginning to thrive.
